CRAIG CAFFALL BAND Singer/songwriter/guitarist Craig Caffall has been involved with music literally since the age of 9 when he began as a drummer in Mexico for a school band. Almost 45 years later he continues to dazzle audiences with his showmanship and vocal talent unsurpassed by many music and bands. Born in the Bay Area and growing up in the United States and Mexico, this bi-cultured musician wows them in both English and Spanish. Caffall’s career has paired him up with some notable artists including Bo Diddley, John Mayall, Martha Davis and the Motels, David Clayton Thomas, Cyril & Charles Neville (Neville Bros.), Lee Oskar, Dan Hicks, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Wier, and Steve Earle, just to name a few. Caffall has been residing for the last 17 years in the San Francisco Bay Area and most recently has been playing guitar with legendary singer Maria Muldaur for the past thirteen years, touring throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, England, Ireland, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Japan. Caffall has also been playing and touring with Shana Morrison (daughter of Van Morrison) for the past four years, here in the Bay Area and venues up and down the west coast. Caffall signed with Marin’s own GRA label (gragroup.com) and released his second CD entitled “Hold Me Up” which was taken from the Big Train sessions. In 2012 Caffall released 3 albums. In January Caffall released the CD, CCB “That’s When You Got It Made”. He produced an album for folk singer Buffy Ford Stewart (wife of songwriter John Stewart from the Kingston Trio). And with Maria Muldaur on her “Christmas At The Oasis” release where he plays on the title track. More recently CCB released “Got It Covered” from the bands cover set list. “Songs that everybody knows but CCB makes them their own” says Caffall proudly. Next month CCB will release a new CD of new songs penned by Caffall entitled “Turns To The Blues”, his fourth album in the past six years. CCB has been playing venues around the Bay Area, up and down the coast and around the country and Mexico for the past 16 years.

Craig Caffall
That's When You Got It Made

Craig Caffall steps out of the shadows and Maria Muldaurs Guitarist and into the spotlight with his new solo CD. It is a mixture of Swamp Rock, Latin and Blues. The CD is a powerhouse of toe tapping melodies from the get go. Craig shines on the Latin inspired Quemado and the title track That's When You Got It Made.

Craig Caffall says music has been a major part of his life since he started playing drums at the ripe old age of eight. After traveling for six months in Europe with his mother Eve and step-father John Muir ("How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive" circ. 1969), the folks shipped Craig off to attend boarding school in England where he took up the guitar and started playing the blues. Caffall started playing professionally when he was 17, playing in clubs in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where he backed up a female singer Jeannie Lynn from Chicago. She used to sing at a Holiday Inn somewhere outside Chicago. Then she moved to San Miguel and would sing at Mama Mia’s bar. She would sing five songs then go out into the audience and schmooze the crowd. Meanwhile I would stay up on stage and sing the rest of the set. Spending half his time in Mexico and half in the United States, Caffall's musical influences comes from Rock, Blues, Country, R&B, Funk, Latin, Ranchero, Norteño, Reggae, Folk and Bluegrass. He was born in the San Francisco Bay Area and has lived there permanently for the last nine years, forming his own band, The Craig Caffall Band, which has had several incarnations. And for the past four years Caffall has been the lead guitarist with Grammy nominated, award winning Blues singer Maria Muldaur ("Midnight at the Oasis" circ. 1974), touring extensively nationally and abroad in countries like Japan, Canada and Mexico. While Caffall has been with Muldaur he has played with or shared the stage with Lori Lewis, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Wier, Linda Tillery, Holly Near, Tracy Nelson, Annie Sampson, Kita Bill, Austin De Lone, Norton Buffalo, Dan Hicks, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, J.D. Souther, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Dave Mason, Dr. John, Blind Boys of Alabama, Taj Majal, Bobby "Blue" Bla Devon Allman, Greg Allman and Friends, Buddy Guy, David Nictern to name a few. In 2008 Caffall appeared on Muldaur's Live in Concert CD/DVD package released through GRA Records featuring a live performance of "Midnight at the Oasis". GRA liked Caffall's work so much on the Muldaur project that they signed him to a deal and released his CD "Hold Me Up" this year which Caffall will be out this summer promoting playing shows behind it. "I have learned a lot more about music since I started playing with Maria and one of the things I love about her repertoire is her love of New Orleans music" comments Caffall admiringly. Before Caffall moved back to the Bay Area in 2001, he lived in New Orleans for five years working in bands like Irma Thomas's backup band, Rockin' Dopsie Jr. and the Zydeco Twisters, Cyril Neville of the Neville Brothers and his own band Big Train.

Craig Caffall
Hold Me UP

Craig Caffall has played music around the world. Picking up the guitar while attending a boarding school in England, Caffall later moved to California and has been playing in the U.S. and Mexico since. The Craig Caffall band has had many incarnation over the years and covered many states. The release of Craig’s album Hold Me Up in 2007 is just another brick in the proverbial wall of Caffall’s exciting career in music. Hold Me Up, the first track on the album as well as the title track, is a blues song complete with blues guitar solos and New Orleans soul. Mudbugs and Dixie Beer has more of southern rock feel with the vocals echoing back to compound the original energy. Cryin’ in the Rain is a classic rock style song that brings to mind the likes of Van Morrison and Tom Petty. Roll On Big Sister, the title track of Caffall’s 1999 release, doesn’t seem to have the same level of musicianship as the other tracks on Hold Me Up although the concept behind the song still deserves merit. The Storm starts out with a little mandolin and fiddle. This song sounds like a mix of bluegrass and some good old classic rock. The vocals in this track stand out in this track as having more energy and emotion than some of the previous songs. Try is a slower song that’s more of a ballad with a ‘Stormy Monday’ feel and definitely fits well here in relation to the rest of the album. I Did It All Bad lyrically mimics Caffall’s bio and has the honesty and poeticism to make a great song. Hope You’re Doing Alright has a 90‘s pop/rock vibe and adds a nice hint of diversity to the album as a whole. Up in Flames is a good song, however the instrumentation is a little repetitive. It would have been nice to hear a little more dynamics in this one. Closing out the album, Hard Life starts out slow with just Craig and the guitar. The song build up to a grand finale - this is the type of dynamics I was talking about earlier - awesome!
